Indian ace shuttler Saina Nehwal, whose is currently ranked number 2 in the world rankings
hasn't had the best of seasons and it does shows in her prize money
earnings past year. According to Badzine, Saina enjoys only the 38th place in the list of top 50 earners
in badminton based on prize money awarded during the 2013 season for
all BWF tournaments.
As Badzine reveals, Saina pocketed only $43,400 in 2013. Women's World No. 1 Li Xuerei from China is in third spot, having earned $143,095 but the biggest earner in women's is double Olympic champion Zhao Yunlei. She earned $167,195, thanks to her incredible run in both mixed and women's doubles events this year
The top spot, of course, is occupied by Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei ($292,540), the men's No. 1. Only one European makes the top 10 - doubles specialist Christinna Pedersen, who is ranked 7th with $123,000.
Interestingly, as pointed by Badzine, Novak Djokovic collected $12.9 million in prize money in 2012, which is equal to 40 times what Lee Chong Wei has won this year.
The study reveals that even if the prize money is increasing, it is still difficult for a lot of players to make a living without sponsors and help from their federations and clubs.
